“I had the pleasure recently of sitting down (virtually) with Delaware-based singer-songwriter Monika Bullette for a short conversational interview. A close personal friend for 30 plus years, we met through the Newark, Delaware music scene in the ‘90s, where we performed and wrote songs together in a band called Obese Pharaohs of Funk. Being neither overtly overweight, Egyptian or particularly funky, we eventually smartened up and later renamed the band Nero (not to be confused with the British electronic music trio of the same name who came around years later). Well, to quote Bryan Adams “had a band and we tried real hard… should’ve known we’d never get far..”

Following Nero’s downfall, she released her critically acclaimed album The Secrets in 2005, which at the time lit up the blogosphere with comparisons to Nancy Sinatra, Stereolab, Loretta Lynn. and the album Forever Changes by Love.

Shortly after that, she teamed up with Smashing Orange alum Rob Montejo to form The Sky Drops, releasing a full-length record, Bourgeois Beat plus a handful of EPs.

But most recently, she’s returned with a fantastic new single, Soapy Cocktails, her first solo material in close to 20 years. I was fortunate enough to be in the studio and play some guitar on this latest collection of songs (all of which are excellent by the way), and which brought our musical collaboration back full circle some 30 years later.”
