Group exhibition
Collaboration with Lauren E. Peters

16 January – 25 April 2021

As part of The Delaware Contemporary’s 2021 Winter/Spring exhibition series, studio artist Lauren E. Peters selected a group of artists to collaborate with by reimagining her signature body of self-portrait work. Peters describes painting self-portraits as an isolating experience with an imagined audience. “I’ve always encouraged the viewer to attempt to see themselves and each other differently, but in the moment it’s hard to look past all the images of a single person using a singular style of painting.”

For this exhibition, Peters’ asked a selection of respected and admired artists to create their interpretation of her 2016 piece self-portrait (orange), using the painting itself for inspiration and/or the source photo. This collaboration will transform the portrait with different hands and unique styles. “We critically judge each other on appearances, and I organized this group to break this one singular idea into layers reflective of the many ways we could choose to see ourselves and each other.”

Lauren E. Peters became a studio artist at The Delaware Contemporary in 2015, hoping to return to oil painting after an extended hiatus and began painting self-portraits. In 2018 Peters was awarded the Emerging Artist fellowship from the Delaware Division of the Arts. She holds a BA in Visual Arts and has kept up with her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.
